Poems For Funerals
Traditionally many people have chosen to read a passage from the Bible, or other sacred text, rather than a poem because they think that this is more appropriate, but in our increasingly secular society this is not always appropriate. It is far more common these days to choose something from the growing collection of poems for funerals.
Whilst it is possible to speak at length about how your life was touched by the friend or family member who has just died, it is preferable to keep it comparatively brief so that your words are clear and remain in the minds and hearts of the people you are speaking to. This is where taking a suitable poem and either using it 'as is' or adjusting it to your needs can be so beneficial at a time when emotions are running high.
You should always aim to acknowledge both the people and achievements in a life. Death makes us all feel vulnerable and even the simplest of words can be a source of great strength for anyone suffering a loss. Many families today do not attend Church, or subscribe to any religion and would find little comfort in a religious reading, but a sensitively written poem can be a source of comfort.
